What is HIPAA?

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) addresses two components of practice management:

Patient Privacy:

  • Patients have significant new rights to understand and control how their health information is used.
  • Providers are required to give patients a clear written explanation of how they can use, keep, and disclose their health information.
  • Patients must be able to see and get copies of their records, and request amendments; a history of most disclosures must be made accessible to patients.
  • Patient authorization to disclose information must meet specific requirements.
  • Patients have the right to request restrictions on the uses and disclosures of their information.
  • Providers generally cannot condition treatment on a patient's agreement to disclose health information for non-routine uses.
  • Recourse is provided if privacy protections are violated.

Electronic Claims:

  • Electronic claims will use the new HIPAA 837 format.

Is Practice Today HIPAA compliant?

Yes. Yes. Yes. Practice Today (Pro) ver03.01 has met the HIPAA requirements pertaining to patient record confidentiality and tracking. The HIPAA 837 format has been implemented, and has been tested with many clearinghouses and agencies that accept that format.

Please note that there are some HIPAA requirements that have nothing to do with software, and everything to do with office procedure. You should contact your HIPAA compliance officer for details.

It is our policy to implement all HIPAA interface requirements as they are announced. However, our government has yet to completely define and disclose all HIPAA specifications. Thus, HIPAA compliance is an on-going process.

If you currently have a Software Support Contract, please call (626) 578-9524 to schedule your update and 837 testing.
